The Ark Returns to Israel (1 Samuel 6:1-14)

The Philistines captured the Ark, and because they had taken the ark of the covenant, God had punished them with disease and affliction, each of the 5 cities that had the Ark.  They return the ark to Israel out of fear of further consequences because of their sin. An exposition of 1 Samuel 6:1-14.

The Fall of the Philistine Idol (1 Samuel 5:1-12)

The text shows the consequences of the Philistines capture of the Ark of the Covenant. and the destroying of their Idol. They were all stuck with tumors and they decided to move the Ark from Ashdod to Gath.

Glory Departed (1 Samuel 4:12-22)

Israel has been defeated in battle against the Philistines and the Ark of the Covenant has been taken. Eli dies and his daughter-in-law has a son who is named Ichabod.  An exposition of 1 Samuel 4:12-22.

The Error of God’s People (1 Samuel 4:1-11)

Israel was in a sinful state and didn’t repent and seek Jehovah’s guidance before going into battle against the Philistines and suffered a great loss.

Samuel’s Call as a Prophet and Judge (1 Samuel 3:1-21)

This text brings the transition from the end of the ministry of the High Priest Eli, to the Lord’s calling of Samuel as the Prophet and Judge over Israel.

The Sin of Eli’s Sons (1 Samuel 2:18-36)

The text contains the vile sins of Hophni and Phinehas and the judgment of the sons of Eli. God sends a prophet to Eli to pronounce His judgment against his son’s for the great wickedness that they had committed against God and His Tabernacle, as well as God’s people Israel. An exposition of 1 Samuel 2:18-36.

Sinning Against A Holy God (1 Samuel 2:11-17)

The essence of the text is the wickedness of Eli’s sons Hophni and Phinehas who were supposed to serve as priests at the tabernacle to sacrifice offerings in Shiloh. An exposition of 1 Samuel 2:11-17.

Jess Whetsel


Jess Whetsel was born and raised in Northern California. He married his wife, Marcia, in 1965. They moved to Idaho along with their two children in 1977. Jess was saved in 1977 through the ministry of Southside Community Church, Cocolalla, ID.

Jess and Marcia were discipled one -on -one for three years using a Bible School curriculum. He then taught Sunday School, was involved in a Prison Ministry, Bible studies and discipleship. Jess was a cabinet maker by trade and when construction slowed down in 1983, he moved his family to Hayden Lake. He became a lay pastor in a local church there for 10 years.

After their two children were married, they moved back to the Sandpoint area. They began attending Kootenai Community Church in 2000. Jess has been active in teaching adult Sunday School, Bible Studies, and discipleship. Jess has been an elder since June of 2003.
